Detailed Itinerary
Early Morning (6:00 AM – 8:00 AM):
- Wake up early and have a good breakfast at your hotel in Kathmandu. You’ll need the energy for the hike!
- Take a taxi or private car to get to the starting point of the hike, Budhanilkantha Temple. This should take about 30 minutes.
- The temple itself is a beautiful sight, so take some time to explore it before you start your hike. The reclining statue of Lord Vishnu is a sight to behold.
Morning (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM):
- The hike to Shivapuri starts from behind the temple. The trail is well-maintained and easy to follow. The first part of the hike is through a forest, which provides some shade from the sun.
As you continue to hike, the views of the Kathmandu Valley will start to open up. You might also see some wildlife, such as monkeys and birds.
- After a couple of hours, you will reach Nagi Gompa, a Buddhist monastery. This is a good place to take a break and enjoy the panoramic views of the valley.
Afternoon (12:00 PM – 5:00 PM):
- From Nagi Gompa, the trail continues uphill to the summit of Shivapuri. The last part of the hike is the steepest, but the views from the top are definitely worth it.
- On a clear day, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, including Manaslu, Langtang, and Gaurishankar. You can also see the entire Kathmandu Valley spread out below you.
- After enjoying the views, have a picnic lunch at the summit. Then, start your descent back down to Budhanilkantha Temple.
Evening (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM):
- The descent is much easier than the ascent. Once you reach Budhanilkantha Temple, take a taxi or your car back to Kathmandu.
- Relax and reflect on your amazing hike! You’ve conquered Shivapuri!
Here are some additional things to keep in mind when planning your Shivapuri hike:
- The best time to go for the hike is during the spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November) months. The weather is usually pleasant during these times.
- The hike is about 15 kilometers long and takes around 7-8 hours to complete. Make sure you are in good physical condition before attempting the hike.
- Wear sturdy shoes and comfortable clothing. Bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and plenty of water.
- Don’t forget to pack your camera! You’ll want to capture the amazing views from the top of Shivapuri.
- There are no shops or restaurants along the trail, so make sure to pack all the food and drinks you will need for the hike.
