Trip Overview
The Mardi Himal Trek is one of the interesting treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal full of natural and cultural beauty. It is not crowded like many other treks and offers a great hidden beauty from where one can trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m). This base camp is located at the foot of the great Mardi Himal and the sacred Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) Mountain. The trail passes through wonderful lush rhododendron and oak forests, alpine meadows, and rugged landscape, rewarding the trekkers with great panoramic views of snow-covered mountains such as Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre. The Mardi Himal Trek 9 Days is moderate in difficulty and quite peaceful, making it a perfect fit for trekkers who love adventure in the Himalayas and want to do it in a more peaceful environment.
The Mardi Himal Trek 9 Days is both a natural and cultural trek. It passes through Gurung and Magar villages, as they stand witness to Nepal’s warm and unique rural lifestyle characterized by hospitality, culture, and local flavors. Here you can find terraced farmlands, grazing yaks, and bright fluttering prayer flags against high mountains. Mardi Himal Trek offers you a link with nature as well as culture-the culture of the Himalayas. That indeed, is trekking in its completeness.
Preparation for Mardi Himal Trek 9 Days
Required Permits for Mardi Himal Trek
If you are ready to go to Mardi Himal Trek 9 Days, there are two major permits that you will require. They are: Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card.
These permits can be obtained from Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or Pokhara. You must submit the copies of your passport, visa, photographs, travel insurance, and permit fees to be eligible to gain these permits. You don’t have to worry about it as our guides will help you through the process.
Considering the cost, the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) has the price of NPR 3000 for international trekkers and NPR 1000 for trekkers from SAARC region. Similarly, Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card will cost you NPR 3000 per person.
Guides and Porters
One of the best things you can do to improve your experience on the Mardi Himal Trek 9 Days is to hire experienced guides and porters. Guides are knowledgeable about the routes of the region’s trails, local customs, and safety protocols. They make this journey not only enjoyable but secure. They also share priceless knowledge about the culture, flora, fauna, and history of areas crossed by each trail.
Porters help to relieve your burden by taking care of the more significant belongings during the walk so that you can enjoy the scenery much better. The porters carry around 20-25 kg per person and are accustomed to terrain. Hiring local guides and porters promotes local economies and is an ethical way to guarantee fair wages and working conditions. It is very important to be grateful and respectful for their hard work, as without them, your trek becomes unsuccessful.
Hiring a guide can cost you around USD 25 to 35 per person daily, while porters charge you around USD 20 to 30 per person.
Best Season for Mardi Himal Trek
The best time to do the Mardi Himal Trek 9 Days is from September to November and from March to May, when the weather is generally clear and dry. It is possible to do the trek at other times of the year, but the weather can be more unpredictable, and some trails may be inaccessible due to snow.
Communication and Internet during Mardi Himal Trek
Mardi Himal Trek is a trek with limited communication because of the high altitude, though the limitations might not reach the level of Annapurna Circuit or Sanctuary Trek. Mobile network providers such as Ncell and Nepal Telecom usually cover the lower areas of Pokhara and the nearby villages. But as you go up to High Camp or Mardi Himal Base Camp, the signal weakens a lot. Most teahouses on the way will have Wi-Fi, which is, however, offered at an extra cost and might be much slower or unreliable because of their remoteness.
For emergencies, some guides might be carrying satellite phones. Most trekking groups will announce to their communication channels if there is any change in plans. In this case, getting a local SIM with data or a global Internet roaming plan helps to a certain extent, but always expect some areas without network coverage.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is necessary for Mardi Himal Trek. High-altitude trekking, medical emergencies, emergency evacuation, trip cancellations, or delays must all be included in the terms of this insurance. One thing to keep in mind is that altitude sickness doesn’t spare. When coverage for emergency evacuation is in place, though, help is not far away.
Make sure your coverage specifies trekking above 4,500 meters, as typical policies often rely on wording pertaining to “normal holidays.” Copy and carry the policy with you before you up-sticks and leave, as well as share the policy with your guide or trekking agency. With all incidents being rare, unpredictability with weather or health issues can take place, making it important to have insurance for trekking.
We highly recommend you buy your travel insurance from trusted companies like AXA Assistance and Travelex.
Food and Accommodation
Basic accommodation and food during the trek to Mardi Himal will be available. Teahouses, or small lodges along the way, give simple rooms like twin beds or shared bathrooms. Although some areas have offered only common sleeping areas, as you climb up the site, the facilities become limited.
Teahouse kitchens prepare meals; their menus have local Nepali items like dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables). International cuisine options such as pasta, pancakes, and soups are only available at lodges in lower altitudes. Usually, fresh and nutrient-rich, this food supplies energy for trekking purposes.
There is boiled or bottled drinking water, although bringing a purification system is recommended to minimize plastics. Rooms might not be heated, so ensure that you take along a warm sleeping bag.

Detailed Itinerary
The adventure starts today in Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal. After clearing immigration at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be welcome to the city, whereby you will be transferred to your hotel by a representative from Mountain Treks Nepal. This lovely city is a mixture of various things: history, culture, and modernity.
Depending on when you arrive, you can hang out in the hotel or explore the buzzing streets of Thamel, filled with wonderful shops, restaurants, and local crafts. For some of the world heritage sites in Kathmandu, you may find Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. If time permits, you may visit some of these sites. The historic sites showcase the wealth of architectural and spiritual heritage of Nepal.
The evening is perfect for preparing for the trek tomorrow. This is the day to rest, adapt to the altitude, and sample some Nepalese hospitality and culture. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.
On the second day of the Mardi Himal Trek 9 Days, you will be going to Pokhara. This charming lakeside city is also referred to as the gateway to the Annapurna region. The whole journey, all 7 hours of it, will take you along the most scenic roads, with lush green hills, terraced farmlands set aside with small villages, and beautiful rivers like Trishuli and Marshyangdi. If you fly, a brief 25 minutes will take you through some magnificent aerial views of the Himalayas, with rolling valleys below.
You will check in to your hotel, catching some time out to explore Pokhara. The serene Phewa, mirroring the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks, is one of the most treasured gems in the city. You can also take a boat ride on the lake or visit Tal Barahi Temple, placed atop an island in the lake are both highly recommended.
Other attractions are Devi’s Fall, the mysterious Gupteshwor Cave, and the pagoda of World Peace, which promises superb views over the city and surrounding mountains. Pokhara’s easy-going spirit is the perfect place to stay overnight before the trek that will begin tomorrow.
After a warm breakfast, you will drive to Kande before trekking to Pitam Deurali. This is a veritable hour’s journey from Pokhara, wherein everything changes as the trekking adventure truly begins. The path moves steeply upwards through terraced farms and rhododendron forests to the Australian Camp, known for the panoramic view of the Annapurna range; it is an optimum point for a short rest.
From here, the path provides beautiful sights through Pothana, a small village where trekkers usually pass for lunch. Trekking through these small settlements, you will experience the traditional Gurung culture and architecture, and the trail occasionally gives snowy peek-a-boos to sharpen your expectations for the earlier scenes.
As you reach Pitam Deurali, the surroundings will reward you with mesmerizing views of the valleys and distant mountains. You will sleep in a cozy teahouse where local meals will allow you to relax for the next phase of the Mardi Himal Trek.
Today, the journey takes you deeper into the heart of the Annapurna region. Leaving Pitam Deurali, the trail winds through thick rhododendrons and oak woods, particularly dreamy in spring with radiant blossoms and melodies from Himalayan birds. It’s a good trail, well marked, but a gradual ascent as one gets used to increasing altitudes.
With the increasing height, the density of the vegetation also thins out, showing splendid views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. During the afternoon period, you might find a good time to take a breather at Forest Camp or Rest Camp, tiny village settlements, and great places for a break or a hot lunch. The trail is quite peaceful, with not much crowd, making it feel really quiet and solitude.
Once you make it to Low Camp, you can catch breathtaking views of Mount Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Mardi Himal. Accommodation in the local tea houses here is basic yet comfortable.
The hike on the fifth day of the Mardi Himal Trek is relatively short but can be said to be a steeper climb from Low Camp to High Camp. Apart from that, the best part is the changes in scenery from dense forests to alpine shrubs and vast meadows. The ridge has uninterrupted views of Annapurna and Mount Machhapuchhre, as they stand magnificently to the north.
The trail is every bit of an experience; with every step, the trekkers can have a view of towering peaks and deep valleys. On the way, open pastures are visible, where yaks and mountain goats are some of the trekkers’ highlights, giving the trek trail a vibrant feel. The air gets thinner as one approaches High Camp; thus it is important to pace oneself and keep refreshed.
The high camp sits upon a ridge with amazing views of Mardi Himal and the surrounding peaks at this stage. Overnight stay at a High Camp, but you must prepare for the nighttime as the temperature might drop very low.
The sixth day of the Mardi Himal is the most awaited day of the trekking schedule. We will wake up early in the morning and then hike to the viewpoint from where you can catch the sunrise on this day. The high camp, also known as Mardi Himal Base Camp, is a rugged, steep trail needing concentration and care most of the time, but one can hardly be affected by the beauty outside.
As you hike up, the whole grandeur of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre, and Mardi Himal slowly unfolds before you. The upper viewpoint indeed has a 360-degree view of several snow-covered peaks and the vast Annapurna Sanctuary below. Any visitor to the base camp can feel their effort and unmatched views are worth every step.
After satisfying your eyes and filling your cameras with some beautiful memories, you will take a reverse track back to High Camp. You will have an easy descent, which can make you appreciate the landscapes. You will spend the night at High Camp celebrating the journey you have had so far.
On the eighth day of the Mardi Himal Trek, you will wake up early in your hotel and have a warm breakfast. The time after that marks the beginning of your journey back to Kathmandu, whether it be by flight or by road. Although long, it provides a final opportunity to take in the stunning scenery that is Nepal-from deep green hills to flowing rivers. A flight, however, would mean a faster and better view while getting back to the capital.
Upon landing in Kathmandu, you will have the other part of the day for touring the city or going souvenir shopping. Well-known areas are vibrant Asan Bazaar where one finds spices, textiles, and handmade local crafts. Or go back to one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Swayambhunath (the monkey temple) or Patan Durbar Square.
In the evening, you will join a farewell dinner organized by Mountain Treks Nepal, where you can enjoy traditional Nepali cuisine. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.
The ninth day of the Mardi Himal trek marks the end of your stay in Nepal. You will bid farewell and head towards your home country.
As you have successfully completed the Mardi Himal trek, you will always be filled with the memories of the Mardi Himal and Annapurna region for your lifetime.
