Overview

Mt. Manaslu is world’s eighth highest peak with an altitude of 8161m. Mt. Manaslu is a part of Nepalese Himalayas located in Gorkha district (Mansiri Himal). It is situated about 40 miles east of Mt. Annapurna (the tenth highest mountain of the earth) in Kaski District. Manaslu is located along the border of Nepal and China at west-central Nepal. Manaslu Expedition is a favorite destination for all who seek expedition and trekking.

Mt. Manaslu is also known as Kutang. In Sanskrit ‘Manasa’ means ‘Mountain of the Spirit’ and is converted to this Gorkha’s highest peak Mt. Manaslu as ‘soul’ or ‘intellect’. Manaslu Expedition is considered one of the most dangerous mountain climbing activities and is best for the experienced climbers.

Manaslu region is a finest mountaineering and trekking destination in Nepal. It is a controlled trekking area which requires the permit to organize trekking and only limited number of groups get travel permit every year. The main route of Mt. Manaslu is Northeast face, Manaslu Expedition demands more time than other 8000 meters peaks in Nepal due to long approach to reach to the base of the mountain, however, the option of the helicopter can make an expedition shorter.

Japanese trekkers popularize the Manaslu area, regarding it as the ‘Japanese mountain.’ After several attempts in 1953 and 1956, the Japanese successfully climbed Manaslu in 1956. This Japanese team was all female and introduced a first women successor of climbing over 8000 meters peak. Some mountaineers view Manaslu as the best alternative to Cho Oyu and consider it a better training mountain for Everest.

Best season for Manaslu Expedition

Spring season of March to May and Autumn season of September to November is the best time for Manaslu Expedition. Monsoon rains and the winter rains are considered to be the most unfavourable time climbing.
