It gives added opportunity to visit the traditional Khumbu Sherpa villages such as Namche Bazaar, Dole, and Gokyo, where Sherpa culture can be appreciated and hospitality enjoyed.

Gokyo Valley Trek offers marvelous sceneries regarding sceneries beautiful valleys and peaks. It also gives time for the trekkers to know the unique culture that these regions bear. During the trekking journey, it also encounters many Buddhist monasteries, old chortens and crucibles highly decorated with fluttering colored prayer flags, giving the whole trekking experience an extra spice.

Unlike the crowding routes to the Everest Base Camp, this route gives an opportunity to have a fresher and more intimate experience while trekking. This route also connects people with the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas. Gokyo valley Trek is tough, as a good degree of fitness is required with efficient preparation, yet it is blessed with breathtaking landscapes.

Hiking around Gokyo Valley viewed as a traditional trek that offers splendid views of the mountain peaks and the Ngozumpa Glacier. The image of this section is linked with the rising views of the most well-known mountains in Nepal, at an elevation of 8000m such as Cho Oyu, Everest, Makalu and Lhotse which are obviously noticeable from Gokyo Ri above Gokyo Lake.

Furthermore, the most amazing features are the view of the marvelous ice ridge between Cho Oyu and Gyachung sited in Khumbu region. Especially in the Spring season, Gokyo valley will bloom the voluminous species flower in the green valley. For flower lover trekker’s Gokyo valley Trek 11 Days is best trekking route.

Permits and Regulations required for Gokyo Valley Trek

All trekkers must be aware of certain permits and regulations before proceeding on the Gokyo Valley Trek. To trek in the area, you must apply for its required permits, which are the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit.

The Sagarmatha National Park entry permit is mandatory since Gokyo lies within this restricted area of Sagarmatha National Park. You can obtain it at the park entrance in Monjo or through the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu. It costs NPR 3000 for foreign trekkers and NPR 1000 for SAARC Nationals.

Besides the national park permit, trekkers will be expected to acquire a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit because they are going to trek in the Khumbu Area. These permits are issued so that tourists will comply with the local authority rules, and at the same time, it helps in conserving and managing the area. The price will be NPR 3000 per person.

Following the guidelines and regulations set by the local authorities would help in conserving the natural beauty of this valley. The trekkers are encouraged to have eco-friendly travel, support local people, and Keep Leave No Trace principles while trekking.

Communication and Internet

Communication in the Gokyo Valley Trek 11 Days varies according to the location. Some major places, such as Namche Bazaar and Gokyo, have good cellular network coverage, especially from network providers like Ncell and Nepal Telecom. As you trek further into remote areas, however, the quality might decline. Some trekking lodges at important stops may provide Wi-Fi, but it can be slow and costs extra.

This makes many trekkers prefer buying a prepaid SIM card with a data package (available in Kathmandu) or using a satellite phone to secure proper communication throughout their trekking experience. Internet access is great in tea houses along the route through Everest Link service pay-as-you-go service.

Food and Accommodation during Gokyo Valley Trek

During the Gokyo Valley Trek, you will find comfortable teahouses along the trail. In bigger villages like Namche Bazaar, there are better lodges that even have bath facilities within rooms. A typical room has twin beds with blankets. There are increasingly fewer facilities as you go up in altitude, and there is little heating. Service providers often bill extra for hot showers and charging electronic devices.

Tea house food is heavy in carbs but good in calories. The standard dishes include dal bhat (rice and lentil curry), noodles, pasta, potatoes, soup, and momos (Tibetan dumplings). In villages like Namche, there might be variations such as pancake, pizza, and espresso.

Travel Insurances

Gokyo Valley Trek is a high altitude trek which takes you over 5000 meters and risks are common. So it is mandatory to have travel insurance. Your coverage should include incidents including accidents, altitude sickness, cancellations resulting from trip or itinerary changes and any medical treatments prescribed.

Mountain Treks Nepal does not buy or sell travel insurances but we do recommend some of the trusted platforms like Travelex and Allianz to get your travel insurance.

Guides and Porters for Gokyo Valley Trek

Hiking up over 5000 meters is not an easy job, and it requires a helping hand for sure. Gokyo Valley Trek 11 Days is one of the strenuous treks in Nepal and it is highly important to find a guide for an effective and secure journey. Hiring guides and porters at Gokyo Valley Trek brings added value to the journey. Guides are experts in the regions as they have good insights concerning topography, weather, culture, and altitude dangers, ensuring a much safer trip. Additional services offered include permits, logistical arrangements, and knowledge of the history and culture of the region.

Porters take care of all the very heavy luggage (usually about 20-25 kg), allowing you to trek with whatever you need for a day. Hiring a guide and porters enriches the experience by directly benefiting the local economy and fitting into responsible tourism. You can tip both the guide and porter as a portion of gratitude for their hard efforts. Most trekkers prefer to hire guides and porters through a reputable trekking agency in Kathmandu like Mountain Treks Nepal.

The cost of hiring a guide can range anywhere from USD 25 to 35 per day, with some experienced ones even charging around USD 50. Similarly, porters charge you around USD 20 to 30 per person per day.

Currency Exchange and ATMs

While you set on for the Gokyo Valley Trek 11 Days, managing finances becomes the major priority. You can exchange foreign currency into Nepali Rupees in Kathmandu, mainly in Thamel, at licensed currency exchange centers and banks. Carry small exchanged currencies rather than larger bills when visiting teahouses and small shops.

Namche Bazaar, the largest settlement along the trail, has a few ATMs. There are no ATMs along the trail after Namche, so trekkers must budget their purchases with enough cash to use for accommodation, food, Wi-Fi, and tipping.

You must prepare your budget carefully to manage the cash, considering other costs such as electricity charging for your gadget or emergency expenses. Last but not least, you must always carry some extra cash as a buffer.

    Detailed Itinerary

The first day of the Gokyo Valley Trek starts with a flight to Lukla (2810m), which takes just 35 minutes. On landing, you will meet your guides and porters and then your hike starts. The uphill climb is easy and takes you through the serene Dudh Koshi Valley to Phakding (2620m). You will cross the Thadokoshi River on a solid suspension bridge. You may also see Kusum Kanguru while you hike uphill.

You will pass along Chheplung (2700 m) which features intricate carvings on Buddhist mani stones and prayer wheels. The trek from here to Phakding is easy and leads nicely into the journey. Overnight stay at a tea house in Phakding.

The second day of the Gokyo Valley Trek starts in Phakding. The trail tracks northwards into dense forested land as it crosses the Dudh Koshi River on suspension bridges covered with brightly colored prayer flags. Continuing upward, you’ll find several villages like Monjo Jorsale, and into Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where your permits will be checked.

Namche Bazaar (3440 m), the largest settlement in this region, welcomes one after trekking for about 5-6 hours. This busy village, also called the gateway to Everest, is full of teahouses, shops, bakeries, and markets for trekkers. You can immerse in its Sherpa culture while also enjoying the stunning views of the mountains. Overnight stay at a hotel in Namche.

As acclimatization is very important for good preparation before moving to higher elevations, Namche Bazaar gives the ideal location for that. You can go on a day hike after breakfast to the nearby villages of Khunde and Khumjung. These settlements featured the traditional Sherpa culture and Buddhist monasteries. Other attractions include the Syangboche Airstrip (3,790m) giving breathless views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku.

The nearby Everest View Hotel has the very best, where breath-taking mountain views could complement a cup of tea. This is as much about physical acclimatization as it is about becoming permeable to the beautiful environment and cultural richness of Khumbu. After lunch at Khumjung, you will return to Namche via a scenic trail.

Starting from Namche, the path climbs the trail to a ridge that allows excellent views of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The trail branches at a high point above the Dudh Koshi River. A steep ascent and flat stretches with rhododendron forest colors in spring characterize this section.

From there, the route dives steeply to the riverside village of Phortse Thenga (3,680m), crammed with juniper and rhododendron trees. As the villagers observe, Phortse Thenga is a quiet hamlet with opportunities to see wild animals like Himalayan monals and musk deer. The day’s journey is quite short, it’s a mere 4-5 hours long but worth it in preparation for higher altitudes.

On the fifth day of the Gokyo Valley Trek, the trail from Phortse Thenga climbs gradually through juniper and alpine forests, and gives views into valleys that are behind the surroundings. This landscape changes drastically: it will be dotted with grazing pastures as you go up. The view is mesmerizing, with peaks like Cho Oyu (8,188m), Thamserku and Kantega.

We will reach Machermo (4,410m) by midday, which gives everybody enough time to rest and stroll around this lovely village. Primarily famous for acclimatization, Machermo has a clinic of the Himalayan Rescue Association providing counseling for altitude sickness. Here, you have a very good opportunity to prepare well for the days that lay ahead.

Today, we will be targeting to reach Gokyo by the evening. The hike from Machermo (4,410m) to Gokyo (4,750m) provides gorgeously defined visual imagery but with steep landscapes. The trail climbs uphill as it carries you within the great folds of Cho Oyu above and the Ngozumpa Glacier below.

You will walk through the delightful settlement Pangram at 4,390m and then traverse rugged ridges with cool valley and glacier views. Also, you can see Gokyo Village and lie beneath the beautiful shades of the pristine Gokyo Lakes. These sacred high-altitude lakes reflect the peaks that surround them, creating an unreal atmosphere. After lunch, you can visit the fourth and fifth lakes, which are very close to some of the world’s tallest mountains, including Everest and Cho Oyu.

Today, an early morning trek to Gokyo Ri (5,357m) gives excellent views of the Everest region. The steep climb takes about 2-3 hours but pays off at the top with the 360-degree view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The sight of such high peaks all lit up in the morning is something to behold and with the golden rays over them, it makes a mesmerizing ambience.

This day is for discovering what the Gokyo Valley offers, which is much in natural beauty and peaceful majesty. You will spend one more free night at a tea house in Gokyo Village.

The eighth day of the Gokyo Valley Trek brings you back to Dole (4200m). This descent is amongst the easiest, so you can all admire the beautiful view of snow-capped peaks and glacial rivers while moving at a very slow pace. The trail goes through juniper and rhododendron forests with a chance to see wildlife such as pheasants and Himalayan goats.

This region is relatively quiet and peaceful, so it can be one of the best stopping points to rest after days of hiking at higher altitudes. Overnight stay at a tea house.

The descent from Dole to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) is truly a combination of simpler terrain and great views. The path draws you through lush rhododendron and juniper forests with occasional chances of spotting the few Himalayan wildlife, such as pheasants or musk deer. The towering peaks slowly give way to lush valleys while walking, and that is a sign of returning to lower altitudes.

It will eventually lead to the lively market of Namche Bazaar, Khumbu’s cultural and economic capital. This is where you get something warm to eat, wander around the marketplace, or relax in a cozy teahouse.

The tenth day of the Gokyo Valley trek will bring you to Lukla from Namche Bazaar. You will leave Namche and catch a downhill trail that goes along the flow of the Dudh Koshi River.

Lukla finally wraps up all of your trekking. The evening is usually spent celebrating with your trekking team. With all of that, a cozy teahouse stay gives you well-deserved rest and preparation for the flight back to Kathmandu the next day.

Today, we will wrap up our Gokyo Valley Trek and take a flight back to Kathmandu. After exploring Gokyo Valley and some of the settlements within the Everest side, we will be taking memories full of Sherpa culture and natural beauties that this region has to offer.

Upon arriving at Kathmandu, you can either rest at your hotel or go explore the bustling lives of the city.
