Trip Overview

The Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak Climbing is an adventure of a lifetime as it covers two of the highest points in Nepal, beginning from Everest base camp and then climbing Mera peak which stands at 6461 meters. Making sure that the journey is filled with culture and amazing landscapes, the journey begins with a flight to Lukla and then leads to Mera peak.

The Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak Climb 26 Days starts from Lukla and leads to some of the most breathtaking sights including the Namche bazaar, Tengboche, Thokla Pass, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar.

The Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak Climbing is a good recommendation for travelers from moderate to high fitness and an adventure spirit. The trek has plenty of acclimatization and preparation days so that the summit can be done without complications, enhancing pleasure and safety.

Furthermore, trekkers also enjoy the warm hospitable ambience of the teahouses as well as the spiritual atmosphere of the monasteries. Accompanied by professional guides and porters, you will enjoy the culturally and naturally rewarding experiences during your journey.

Communication and Internet During Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak Climbing

Communicating during the Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak Climbing is very limited and trekkers have to keep in mind that the Himalayas are pretty remote. Most of the tea houses on the way do provide WiFi service, but that is paid for and is not always reliable. The connectivity in most dense villages like Namche Bazar and Dingboche tends to be better but the speeds are also slow.

You can also get a local Nepalese SIM card like Ncell or NTC which does provide network coverage in some parts of the trek. For those who are going towards Mera Peak, the options of communication are even more limited but we do recommend using satellite phones for effective communication.

Travel Insurance for Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak Climbing

It is advisable to take insurance while going on Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak Climbing. Your travel insurance must have coverage for potential risks, including altitude illness, accidents, delayed flights and evacuations. The insurance they purchase should also say specifically that they target altitudes above 6500 meters which is the height of Mera Peak.

It is always best to go through all such policies carefully and carry a copy of the same while you go trekking in Nepal. We recommend you purchase Travel Insurance from the companies such as Travelex, World Trips, and Allianz.

Food and Accommodation

Food and accommodation during the Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak Climbing 26 Days are simple yet nutritious. It is common for tea houses along the route to prepare and serve food such as dal bhat (lentils soup with rice), noodles, pasta, soups and eggs. The chefs tailor the meals to be energy- and carb-rich to accommodate the trekkers.

Accommodation commonly includes shared rooms with twin beds and warm blankets. When you go up on altitude, the supply of fresh food and the quality of accommodation might reduce hence, carrying some snacks would be ideal. Climbing Mera Peak involves camping at base camp and high camp, where a team cooks your meals.

Importance of Guides and Porters

Guides and porters are an essential component to the success of a safe and enjoyable trek. Apart from being familiar with the region including the route, weather, and the landscape, they are also trained to deal with altitude sickness and other emergencies. They also provide rich cultural and traditional insights while trekking.

Porters assist with the carrying of loads enabling trekkers to concentrate on the adventure and not on the weight of the bags. For Mera Peak, we consider hiring professional guides and porters as two of the most important aspects, especially for mastering a climbing route as well as providing safety during the climb.

Permits for Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak Climbing

The required permits for Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak climbing permit are: Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Municipality Entry Permit, Sagarmatha National Park Permit, and Mera Peak Climbing Permit. The Sagarmatha National Park Permit Allows access to the protected sections of this park, quite rich in vegetation, animals and other beautiful landscapes. It costs NPR 3000 for international trekkers, NPR 1000 for SAARC Nationals, and NPR 100 for Nepalese trekkers. The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Municipality Permit is also essential which costs NPR 3000 per person.

In order to climb Mera Peak, you must obtain a climbing permit from NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association). It costs USD 250 in the Spring seasons (March to May), USD 125 in the Autumn seasons (September to November) and USD 70 in the Winter and Summer seasons (December to February and June to August).

    Detailed Itinerary

Your adventure will begin with your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. You will be welcomed by a Mountain Treks Nepal representative who will greet you and escort you to your hotel. Following hotel check-in, take some time to relax amidst the new surroundings and recover from any jet lag.

Later that day you’ll attend a pre-trek briefing at around 5 PM where you’ll find out everything you need to know about trekking in Nepal from our experienced trip leader as well as resolve any queries/ questions regarding the upcoming adventure and learn some handy tips about how best to prepare yourself for it logistically. You can then spend the rest of the evening getting settled and perhaps venturing out into the lively atmosphere of Nepal’s capital city.

Today is a preparation day and if there is anything you need for the Everest Base Camp with Mera Peak, you will have time to buy it in Thamel. There are also many beautiful ancient cultural sights to explore in Kathmandu such as Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple) and Boudhanath Stupa, UNESCO World Heritage Sites exposing Buddhist and Hindu ancient cultures of Nepal.

This is also an important day where you get introduced to your trekking guides and ask whatever questions are left regarding the Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak. You will sleep at your hotel after final packing for your flight early the next morning.

Your day starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a 35-minute journey that will have you flying above the breathtaking Himalayan range. After landing at Tenzing Norgay Airport, your trekking adventure starts.

After hiking for roughly about 3-4 hours ascending through the settlements of Chheplung and Nurning, we will finally reach Phakding where we will spend our first night in one of the many cozy teahouses.

The trail from Phakding to Namche Bazaar takes you through beautiful landscapes along the Dudh Koshi River. You’ll cross several amazing suspension bridges, one of which is the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge decorated with colorful prayer flags. The climb gets steeper as you near Namche but the sight of Everest and Lhotse make it all worthwhile.

After 6-7 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Namche Bazaar – the gateway to Everest region and also the largest Sherpa village in Nepal. This lively village features cafes, shops, markets and a good mix of modern and traditional way of life. Overnight at your teahouse with stunning views out every window.

Acclimatization is important during the Everest Base Camp with Mera Peak, which we will be doing at Namche Bazaar. Apart from acclimatizing, there are several other things we can do from exploring the Sherpa museum, to hiking up to the Everest View Hotel. From here you will get your first view of Everest as well as Ama Dablam.

Namche is rich in culture involving monasteries and Tibetan shops. You can explore this lively town as you acclimatize focusing on hydration, nutrition, and proper rest.

Leaving Namche Bazaar, the trek starts with a flat trail, where the magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam take your breath away. After walking through forests filled with the scent of pine and rhododendrons, the trail descends steeply down to cross the Imja Khola River. After that, the trail climbs again to Tyangboche, where the famous Tengboche Monastery lies.

Tengboche Monastery is the largest gompa of the Khumbu region, built by Lama Gulu in 1916. Here, you can explore the ambience of Tibetan Buddhism against the backdrop of Ama Dablam.

The way to Tyangboche through rhododendron and juniper woods extends farther into the Imja Khola valley. From there after, the route climbs following the mountain contours toward the village of Pangboche, where the views of the magnificent peaks like Ama Dablam become even more panoramic.

After hiking through the alpine meadows for around 5-6 hours, you reach Dingboche, a small village surrounded by the snow-capped peaks. Overnight stay at a tea house in Dingboche.

You are going to spend the day in Chukung Valley for acclimatization. This valley, just a short hike from Dingboche, offers amazing views of Island Peak, Lhotse, and Makalu. The climb is also good for acclimatization as it rewards you with beautiful scenes.

Once you get back to Dingboche, you can explore the village or catch some moments at your teahouse. This day perfectly provides an opportunity not only to adapt to altitude sickness but also to enjoy the pure environment and lively culture of the Everest region.

We begin to make our way from Lobuche with a climb up within a ridge. This ridge gives you the beautiful views of Taboche and Cholatse peaks. Then, the trail stretches through open meadows pastoral landscape gradually rugged towards Khumbu Glacier.

After 5-6 hours of trekking, you will finally enter Lobuche, which serves as the best place to rest and acclimatize before pushing yourself to Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp.

Today, you are making an important step in your trip to Gorak Shep, the last settlement before the Everest Base Camp. The trail passes through moraine and glacial terrains and the view of Everest as well as of its surrounding peaks is spectacular. A very short rest at Gorak Shep and there you will be ready to have a hike to the Everest Base Camp.

Once you reach the Everest Base Camp, you can enjoy the views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Cholatse. After that, you will hike back to Gorak Shep for the night.

On the eleventh day of Everest Base Camp with Mera Peak, we will hike to Kala Patthar early in the morning. We will have thrilling sunrise views over the whole Everest and Mahalangur ranges. Not only the sunrise but you can also have a 360-degree view of the snow-capped mountain peaks, which will be the major attraction of today.

After exploring Kala Patthar at 5644 meters above sea level, we will retrace our way back to Pheriche. Passing through the lush green forests and small Sherpa settlements, we will finally reach Pheriche after a 5 to 6 hours of trek, where we will stay overnight.

Retracing your steps, you’ll trek back toward Namche Bazaar, descending through the villages of Pangboche and Tengboche. The trail stretches through the Dudh Koshi River, passing roaring white-water rapids and hanging suspension bridges that seem to appear out of nowhere.

After a long day of hiking, you will arrive back in Namche Bazaar. The familiar setting and cozy confines of this Sherpa town will welcome you as you come closer to the end of your adventure to Everest Base Camp. Enjoy all the amenities Namche has to offer and have a peaceful sleep at your teahouse.

The last day of the Everest Base Camp trek brings you back to Lukla. You will follow the Dudh Koshi River back, passing through beautiful Sherpa villages and forests. There are a number of suspension bridges adorned with prayers flags crossing high over the riverbed below, this adds excitement back into returning along an already walked route. It’s great to take in each step as you walk thinking about what you have done and accomplished.

It will take about 6-7 hours until you reach your final destination but truly the beginning of your next journey! Here we will enjoy our last afternoon together with all our porters and supporting crew at one of our favorite tea houses where we ate dinner on many previous occasions before heading across for Mera Peak.

Leaving Lukla, the trail climbs steeply through forests of rhododendron, juniper and pine. Amidst increasingly captivating scenery you’ll ascend to a high mountain landscape where yaks (and yak herders) become more numerous.

After around six or seven hours walking you’ll arrive in Thuli Kharka – a stunning settlement in the mountains. The serenity here and views all around make it a great place to stop overnight.

From Thuli Kharka, you will descend steeply into the Hinku valley through a forest of birch and rhododendron. The soothing environment with a musical sound of birds and wild sounds makes your trek peaceful and more satisfying. You will reach the campsite, Kothe, after crossing a series of streams and waterfalls after a 6-7 hours walk.

Thuli Kharka is also a perfect place among the local Sherpas, making it an ideal place to rest in preparation for next day’s climb to Tangnang.

On the sixteenth day of the Everest Base Camp with Mera Peak, we will hike from Kothe to Tangnang and the trek time is about 5-6 hours. From Kothe you will head along the west bank of the Hinku River, gradually climbing above the river, passing through the beautiful Gondishung.

After lunch, you will continue on to Tangnang (4180m) which is situated beneath a massive moraine directly at the foot of the Hinku Nup Glacier.

The trail up to Tangnang is a steady climb through forests along the lateral moraine. Above Gondishung, you can have the stunning scenes of the summer huts of Yak herders.

After a 3 hour hike from here, you will reach Khare which comes close as you cross the river and make an uphill climb. Overnight stay at Khare enjoying the Traditional Nepali Cuisine.

To help your body acclimatize for the climb, you’ll spend today resting and preparing at Khare. A brief hike around Khare lets you adapt into the altitude while getting views of peaks such as Mera and Kusum Kanguru.

You also have a practice session during which your guides will demonstrate essential climbing skills and safety techniques. Practicing these will make you feel more comfortable on the terrain ahead. Later, relax, drink plenty of water and enjoy peaceful Khare.

The nineteenth day of the Everest Base Camp with Mera Peak brings you to the Mera Base Camp. This phase of trek is relatively short but tough, climbing steeply over rocky terrain. While the high altitude might be a problem, the stunning views of the Himalayan giants towering above will keep you inspired.

You’ll arrive at base camp after approximately 5-6 hours where you’ll make camp for the night.

The trek to Mera High Camp involves a long, steep climb over icy and rocky terrain. It’s tough going and a real test of your resolve but reaching the summit is hugely rewarding and offers stunning views across to Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga.

After 5-6 hours you’ll arrive at High Camp where tents will be setup and food prepared. The view from here is absolutely fantastic. Rest up for the afternoon as tomorrow is Summit Day!

The 21st day of the Everest Base Camp with Mera Peak brings the summit of Mera Peak itself. Summit day starts early in the morning when you’ll climb up on ice and glacier slopes with the help of climbing gears. It will be a long and steady climb to the summit ridge.

From here, you will continue to go to the central summit further to the highest point. From here, you can get a full 360 degree panoramic view of the mighty peaks of Everest region including Mt. Everest (8,848m/29,028ft), Cho-Oyu (8,201m/26,906ft), Lhotse (8,516m/27,935ft), Makalu (8,463m/27,766ft) & Kanchenjunga (8,586m/28’198 ft).

After spending precious time with success on top Mera Peak, you will head back towards high camp for overnight stay.

After the successful summit of Mera Peak, the trek back to Kothe feels more relaxed. The trail takes your steps through the Hinku Valley, descending past familiar sights and terrain of alpine meadows and forests. The sense of achievement from having completed the climb deepens your appreciation for everything you encounter along this trail.

Upon arrival at Kothe, you will be welcomed warmly by a teahouse staff, where you will stay overnight.

The trail today climbs back up towards Thuli Kharka, through lush forests and past some pretty streams and waterfalls. The mountains are never far away and seem even more imposing having climbed onto one of their shoulders.

It takes around 5-6 hrs trekking to reach Thuli Kharka, with lots of stops to take in the peacefulness of this place. You’ll stay overnight in a teahouse at Thuli Kharka, eating well and enjoying the company of other trekkers.

On the last day of the Everest Base Camp Trek with Mera Peak, you will trek back to Lukla. The trail descends through forest, a couple of suspension bridges and Sherpa villages. This is the final opportunity to enjoy the Everest region landscape and Himalayas for one last time on this walk.

After 6-7 hrs, you will reach Lukla. You have successfully completed the Everest Base Camp Trek & Mera Peak Climbing. Overnight at a teahouse in Lukla.

In the morning you take the scenic flight back to Kathmandu. This 35 minute flight over the mountains gives you a last chance for taking some breath-taking views of the green valleys deep down in the basins and the magnificent Himalayas. You will be transferred to your hotel upon arrival.

The rest of the day is free for shopping in Thamel or exploring in any way you wish. Tonight we have our farewell dinner at a typical Nepali restaurant together with a cultural performance.

Your adventure in Nepal comes to an end as you get ready to depart for your home. If you have a late departing flight, you can spend the morning visiting more of Kathmandu or relax in your hotel.
