Mustang Region
The Mustang region is popularly called the “Last Forbidden Kingdom” for the stark beauty and ancient heritage it represents. This semi-arid or changed desert, defined by a vast stretched landscape, red cliffs, and very deep gorges, is the rain shadow of Nepal. Towering from the winged mountains of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri, the historical walled city of Lo Manthang brings us to a precious window into an ancient Tibetan culture. Trekkers have an enchanting experience of the surreal beauty sculptured by erosion on rocks and miles of wind-swept grasslands around them.
The Mustang is culturally one of the richest repositories of the ancient Tibetan Buddhist traditions, with monasteries, caves, and stupas scattered all over the country. The festival of Tiji, with its exuberant dances and rituals, adds another dimension to the culture. This nature and culture medley makes the Mustang Region indeed a very engaging destination for trekkers.
